October first is China's national day, the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic by Mao Zedong in 1949.
After every five years there is a major celebration in Tiananmen Square though in between the year's crowd gathers to the square to see the flags unfurled in the evening.
The area is usually decorated with floral arrangements, lighting and pictures of China's past leaders.
The security on this day to the square is more. The national holiday is declared on this day. Schools children celebrate on this day while singing patriotic songs and also perform on them.
Numerous promotional activities at shopping malls and supermarkets are held to keep the crowd busy.
People also take part in the many events.
