Confucius (551- 479 BC) was a famous Chinese thinker. The man whose original philosophy has grown into a religion is admired as a scholar, teacher and social organizer; his ideas lost popularity during the early years of communism, but now they are enjoying somewhat of a rebirth.

For the first time since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, an official memorial ceremony was conducted on Confucius' 2,555 anniversary. More than 3,000 people attended the ceremony in the great man's hometown Qufu City in Descendants. Government officials and representatives from various walks of life greeted the altar in turn and offer flowers to a statue of Confucius, while people dressed in traditional ancient costumes reenacted ceremonies held in the early Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911).

In Confucius' hometown of Qu Fu, the Confucian Temple in Beijing is the country's largest, and hosts the anniversary celebrations each year on September 28th.
