Beijing Watermelon Festival

In the summer, Beijing's streets are strewn with piles of watermelons for sale. Watermelon Festival was started in 1987. Watermelon fairs have been held in the villages of Da Xing County, which are known for their sweet and juicy melons.

The festival centers on local farmers from Daxing, bringing high- quality watermelons together with lots of celebrations to local fruit markets. Daxing hopes to use the festival to promote the development of the local economy. During the Watermelon Festival, many evening parties and theatrical performances are held. An inter- active experience: After visiting the museum, visitors can go pick watermelons on local farmers' fields.

More than 170 different species of watermelons are on display during the festival. Visitors also find information and displays on high- tech watermelon products. There is a watermelon competition where farmers from all over China take part. Tehy bring their watermelons to the contest, weight and color are taken into consideration and then the top watermelon is auctioned after the competition.
