The Spring festival in Beijing is also known as the Chinese new year. For the Chinese, it is as important as Christmas to people in the Western world. "Guo Nian", meaning "passing the year", is the common term among the Chinese people for celebrating the Spring Festival. It actually means greeting the new year.

The dates for this annual celebration are determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar, so the timing of the holiday varies from late January to early February.

Preparations for the Chinese New Year begin in the last few days of the last moon: People clean their houses, get their hair cut, wear new clothes and prepare delicious dishes.

On the Spring Festival, happy crowds of Chinese people enjoy the Temple Fair in Grand View Gardens, Beijing. A large painting of white rabbits attracts Chinese dancers in their rabbit costumes and groups of older Chinese men entertain crowds at the Temple Fair by playing music on classical instruments.
