Peking University, Not Beijing University

Officially, Beijing University is known as Beijing Daxue. Recently, however, it insists on being called Peking University when referred to in English so as to differentiate the university from other academic and research institutions in Beijing bearing similar or similar-sounding names. In colloquial terms, Peking University is also called Beida.

Regardless of what it is called, whether Beijing University or Peking University, it is still known to be one of the best and one of the most selective schools in China. It opens its doors only to the top students in each province of China. Students admitted to Peking University can choose to enter one of its 30 colleges and 12 departments. The renown of Peking University is not only limited in China but also outside the country, having been placed in the top 50 schools in the entire world.

Peking University as a Research Institution

Peking University is also one of the largest research facilities in Asia. It has in its campus more than 200 research centers specializing in diverse fields, including pure sciences and applied sciences. Its university library is one of the largest in Asia as well, with around eight million documents housed within its premises.
