The Old Palace
On the site of the Beijing Summer Palace once stood an older imperial palace which was built early on by the emperors of the Jin Dynasty 800 years ago to serve as a pleasure retreat. The name of the palace was Golden Hill Palace. The palace stood amidst a garden that became known as the Garden of Clear Ripples, which was once part of the famous three hills and five gardens of Imperial Beijing. Over the years, the emperors of China continued to expand the garden to suit the pleasure and entertainment needs of the royal family.
The New Palace
During the late 1800s, France and England waged a war against China, and their forces laid waste to the imperial gardens. To restore the garden, the Empress Dowager Cixi redirected funds that were supposed to refurbish the imperial navy. She had a new palace built on the site of the burned-down Golden Hill Palace and named it the Summer Palace. It was here that she spent the later years of her life.
Now, the Summer Palace is a public park. Comprised mostly by the Royal Court, the Longevity Hill and the Kunming Lake, it is considered to be among the grandest relics of Imperial China.
